Ozonation is a treatment in which a generator splits the oxygen in the air into ozone (O₃), which oxidises the molecules responsible for smells and damages the cell walls of bacteria, viruses and mould spores. Ozone is unstable and turns back into ordinary oxygen within tens of minutes, so it does not stay in the room and leaves no residue. It is not a fog, a spray or a fragrance: it breaks the smell down instead of covering it with another one.
The treatment runs with no people, pets or plants inside — at working concentration ozone irritates the airways, so the space is closed while the generator runs and aired afterwards. As a guide: up to 25 m² takes 1–1.5 hours, a 50 m² flat 1.5–2 hours, a 120 m² house up to 3.5 hours, then 30–60 minutes of airing. You come back after we leave, once the air has been exchanged; the characteristic after-a-storm smell fades within a few hours.
People book us after smokers, after pets, after illness, after a leak and after a flat has stood closed for months, before moving into a rental and before selling a car. We travel to every district of Krakow and to Wieliczka, Skawina, Zielonki, Niepołomice and Zabierzów.

Ozonation prices in Krakow
The price follows the floor area, because the area sets the volume and the volume decides how long the generator runs. We count the whole place including the hallway, kitchen and bathroom, assuming a standard ceiling height of about 2.6–2.8 m; higher rooms and halls are quoted individually. Every price covers travel within Krakow, preparing the space and airing it afterwards.
| Item | Price | Time | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 25 m² | 200 zł | 1–1.5 h + airing | a studio, a single room, a cellar |
| 26–35 m² | 250 zł | 1.5–2 h + airing | a studio or a small two-room flat |
| 36–50 m² | 300 zł | 1.5–2 h + airing | a two- or three-room flat |
| 51–65 m² | 350 zł | 2–2.5 h + airing | a three-room flat; the generator is moved between rooms |
| 66–80 m² | 400 zł | 2–2.5 h + airing | a large flat or a small house |
| 81–100 m² | 450 zł | 2.5–3.5 h + airing | a house or a two-level flat, several zones |
| 101–120 m² | 500 zł | 2.5–3.5 h + airing | a house: floors, stairs, hall |
| Over 120 m² | from 550 zł | 3.5–4+ h + airing | up to 140 m² at the base price, then +50 zł for every started 20 m²; set the area with the slider |
| Car | 100 zł | 30–40 min + airing | cabin, boot, upholstery and headliner |
| Window cleaning, sofa and mattress cleaning | 10% cheaper | in the same visit | in the “Add window cleaning” and “Add upholstery cleaning” blocks below: clean windows help with airing after the treatment, and a sofa or mattress is a common source of the smell |
Ozonation makes sense once the source of the smell is gone. If the smell sits in fabric — a mattress, a sofa, a carpet — extraction cleaning comes first (a sofa or mattress can be added in the “Add upholstery cleaning” block below) and ozone deals with what is left in the air and in porous surfaces. Ozone alone will not rinse urine out of foam or lift a stain; we say that before the visit, not after it.
What ozonation covers and what it does not
Included
- A conversation about the source of the smell and run time matched to the volume
- Preparing the space: windows closed, vent grilles taped over, wardrobes and drawers opened
- An industrial generator running with no people or animals inside
- Moving the unit between zones in a flat or a house
- Ozonating the inside of wardrobes, chests and the fridge when they are open
- Airing afterwards and checking the air is fit to come back to
- Instructions about plants, pets and open food
- An honest assessment beforehand: whether ozone will achieve anything here
Not included
- Cleaning and washing surfaces: ozone removes neither dirt nor stains
- Taking the source out of textiles: urine, milk or smoke in a sofa need washing
- Mould stains and discolouration: they stay on grout and plaster and are removed separately
- Fixing the cause of damp: a leak, a cold bridge, missing ventilation
- Ozonation with people, pets, plants or an aquarium in the room
- Repeating the treatment weekly: frequent ozone ages rubber and plastics faster
- A guarantee on a smell whose source stays in the building
Smells: what ozone removes and what it does not
Ozone acts on molecules the air can reach. The deeper a smell sits in a material, the less it can do. Below is the honest table — the same one we read out on the phone before taking the booking.
| Source of the smell | Success rate | How we do it |
|---|---|---|
| Cigarette smoke in a flat | very high | A longer run and open wardrobes; after years of smoking usually two sessions. |
| Pet smell in the air | very high | A standard treatment; the bed and textiles have to be washed separately or the smell returns. |
| Mustiness after months closed | very high | Ozone plus a draught; we check whether there is damp in the wall. |
| After illness, before moving in | high | Ozone acts on bacteria and viruses in the air and on the surfaces it reaches. |
| Frying and kitchen smells | high | The treatment after the vent grilles and the hood are cleaned; grease has to be washed off first or it keeps giving off the smell. |
| Smell after a party | high | A short treatment is usually enough once spills have been cleaned out of textiles. |
| Mould smell in the air | medium | Ozone kills airborne spores but does not dry the wall; without fixing the damp the smell returns. |
| Pet urine in a sofa or mattress | low | The urine is in the foam where air does not reach; extraction cleaning first, then ozone. |
| Smell after a fire, soot | low | Soot is a deposit on surfaces and has to be washed off; ozone alone will not solve it. |
| Fresh paint, varnish, glue after a renovation | low | Solvents evaporate on their own; ozone does not speed that up much, airing is enough. |
| Smell from drains and traps | we do not | That is plumbing: a dried-out trap or a missing vent on the stack. |
| Mould stains and discolouration | we do not | Ozone neither bleaches nor washes; those stains are removed mechanically and with a product. |
The rule is simple: ozone finishes the job after cleaning, it does not replace cleaning. If the phone call shows the smell comes from a mattress, a sofa or a wet wall, we say plainly that the treatment alone will not be enough and suggest washing or fixing the cause first.
What to prepare and what to take out beforehand
Ozone is a strong oxidiser. It does not affect building materials or furniture over a single treatment, but the place has to be clean and sealed, and a few things have to leave the room or be protected.
| What | What we do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Dust, crumbs, dirt, the source of the smell | you clean before the visit; mould, the litter tray, the bin bag go beforehand | Ozone works on the air and on surfaces, not on dirt; a source left behind renews the smell within days |
| People and pets | leave for the treatment and the airing | At working concentration ozone irritates the airways and eyes |
| House plants | taken out of the room | Leaves react to ozone faster than anything else in the room |
| Aquarium or terrarium | taken out; if the tank cannot be moved, we leave that room out | Nothing alive may stay inside, and ozone gets into the water |
| Vent grilles, gaps under the front door | taped over with film, untaped after airing | Otherwise ozone escapes into the shaft and to the neighbours, and too little stays inside |
| Paintings, prints, keepsakes, delicate fabrics | taken out or covered | Paper, pigments and old varnish can change shade under a strong oxidiser |
| Open food, fruit, bread | put into closed containers or the fridge | Oxidation changes the taste; packaged food is fine |
| Open medicines, cosmetics without lids | closed | The same rule as for food |
| Wardrobes, drawers, chests | opened wide | The smell sits inside; with the doors closed the treatment misses half the problem |
| Bedding, towels, clothes in the wardrobe | spread out loosely | Ozone works on surfaces; a packed wardrobe will not air out |
| Rubber, natural latex, old seals | not ozonated over and over on a cycle | Repeated oxidation speeds up their ageing |
| Electronics | unplugged; delicate gear (audio, cameras, a turntable) covered | A one-off treatment does them no harm; a cover protects contacts and rubber parts |
If somebody in the household has asthma or there is a small child, book the treatment for a day when the flat will be empty a few hours longer. It is not about ozone residue — that decays quickly — but about being sure the air has been fully exchanged.
Ozone, washing the textiles, or airing and air fresheners
Three realistic options for a 50 m² flat after a smoker, with a sofa and a rug in the living room.
| Criterion | Ozonation | Washing the textiles | Airing and fresheners |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | 300 zł for a 36–50 m² flat | sofa and rug per the upholstery price list | a few tens of zł a month |
| What it removes | smell from the air and porous surfaces | the source from fibres and foam | nothing, it covers one smell with another |
| Time | 2–3 h including airing | 1–3 h plus drying | constantly, with no end |
| Do you have to leave | yes, for the treatment and the airing | no | no |
| Effect on years of smoke | very good after one or two sessions | good for textiles, does nothing for walls | none |
| Effect on urine in a mattress | none, ozone cannot reach it | the right solution | none |
| What is left afterwards | an after-a-storm smell for a few hours | damp fabric for 2–8 h | the smell of the freshener |
| When to choose it | a smell in the air, once the source is gone | a smell in fabric | replaces neither of the above |
When ozonation makes sense
Before moving into a flat somebody else lived in. That is the most common reason for the booking: the place has been cleaned, but the previous tenants' smell sits in the wallpaper, the plaster and the wardrobes. We treat it after the cleaning and before the furniture arrives — ozone then reaches empty walls and the inside of fitted units, and the result is better for the same price.
After illness in the house and after a long absence. The first is about bacteria and viruses on surfaces and the heavy air in a sick room; the second about the mustiness that always appears in a closed, unheated flat. In both cases the treatment is short and one session is enough.
Before selling a car and after carrying pets. Ozone in the cabin for 100 zł takes away the smell of a dog, cigarettes and food from the upholstery, headliner and boot. If the smell sits deep in the seats, they need washing first and ozone finishes off the rest.
How to keep the result after ozonation
- Air the flat several times for 10–15 minutes over the first day — the remaining oxidised molecules leave with the draught
- Remove the source before it comes back: the pet bed, the litter tray, the bin bag, the old hood filter
- If somebody smokes indoors the smell returns — ozone removes it but does not prevent the next one
- Check the ventilation: a taped-over grille in the bathroom or kitchen brings damp and mustiness back within weeks
- Do not dry laundry in a closed room with no ventilation, especially after a treatment against mustiness
- Wash the textiles that soaked up the smell — curtains, throws, bedding — in the same week
- With damp in a wall call somebody about the cause: ozone will not dry it and the problem returns within a month
Is ozonation safe
It is safe when nobody is inside. At working concentration ozone irritates the eyes and airways, so the space is closed while the generator runs and aired before anyone goes back in. There is no compromise here: if somebody asks for a treatment "with a window open and the family at home", we decline — ozone would not work in those conditions anyway, and it is a health risk.
After the treatment ozone decays back into oxygen within tens of minutes and leaves no residue worth worrying about. The after-a-storm smell you notice for a few hours is not leftover chemistry but the oxidised molecules of whatever was in the air. Ordinary airing over the first day clears it completely.
It is worth saying separately what ozone does not do: it does not replace cleaning, it does not sanitise hands or touch surfaces for the future, and it protects against nothing once you have left the flat. Handles, switches and taps get dirty again on the day the household comes home, so simply wipe them with a disinfectant once everyone is back.
Why two sessions are sometimes needed
Ozone works for as long as it is in the air and reaches wherever the air reaches. In a flat after years of smoking, nicotine has soaked into the wallpaper, the plaster and the insides of wardrobes to a depth it releases from slowly, day after day. The first session takes away what is on the surface and in the air; a few days later part of the smell comes back from deeper layers, and a second session closes the matter.
Damp is similar. If there was mould, the smell disappears after the treatment but spores return from every wall that is still wet. That is why with mustiness we ask about the cause first: a leak, a cold bridge, a taped-over vent. A treatment without fixing the cause lasts a few weeks and is not worth paying for twice.
We also say plainly when a second session is unnecessary. The smell of a pet, of illness, or of a flat closed for the winter goes in one session and does not return, provided the source is gone. If it does come back within a week with the source removed, we come again and look for where it really originates — usually a fabric nobody suspected.
